The unincorporated community of Mendocino, California, is located along the Pacific coast in Mendocino County, less than 10 miles south of Fort Bragg. Maintaining a small population of less than 1,000 people, Mendocino covers 2.3 square miles of land on a scenic headland surrounded by water.

The town, originally named Meiggsville, was founded in 1850 as a logging community, and the first post office opened in 1858. By the mid-20th century, Mendocino was becoming an isolated village with a declining population. Revitalization began in the late 1950s with the founding of the Mendocino Art Center, and most of the town was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Today, Mendocino is home to a large number of bed & breakfasts, as well as the annual Mendocino Music Festival.
