The community of Covelo is located in northeastern Mendocino County, along State Route 162 in Northern California. Home to a small population of less than 1,300 people, Covelo covers just over seven square miles of land on the Round Valley Indian Reservation.

Covelo got its beginnings around 1860 with the opening of the area’s first store, and this was followed by a post office ten years later. Some sources claim the town was named after a village in Switzerland, although the closest possibility turns out to be the Italian town of Covolo, near the Swiss border. Today, Covelo maintains a small airport as well as a casino. It’s also the location of the Covelo American Viticultural Area, designated by the federal government for wine-grape growing.
